What is ABS?

ABS is an abbreviation for "Anti-lock Braking System," which is a very effective technology that helps the driver maintain some steering ability and avoid skidding while braking.  Since ABS will not allow the tire to stop rotating so that the driver can brake and steer at the same time, braking continues to be effective without sacrificing safety.

Although the ABS became "standard equipment" in the mid-1980s in nearly all vehicles sold in Canada, there are still some that are built without ABS technology.  Also, the ABS in most pick-up trucks only works on the rear wheels, which promotes directional stability only.
